Alberto Giacometti

It seemed time to feature the work of an artist and sculptor who is my wife's favourite, Alberto Giacometti.

Some years ago whilst in Paris we were fortunate to see an exhibition of his work. Once again it is quite a different thing when one is able to view an extensive collection of work by a single artist. Though appreciating the individual pieces we have seen during our various travels, to describe the impact of seeing over 50 pieces together is impossible.

Needless to say it was difficult to drag Gael my Wife away from the show and we did actually visit the exhibition three times during our visit!

Private viewing at The Gloss Gallery

For those of you who may be in the Exeter region next Thursday do feel free to attend the private viewing of the summer art show at the Gloss Gallery.

Gloss Gallery Exeter

I have been asked to exhibit three pieces at www.glossgallery.co.uk in Exeter for a 6 week show which starts in a couple of weeks.

For one piece I have finally approached my pile of found wood which has been collecting for a year to create a new nautical/maritime assemblage 'Beer Beach Rhythms'.

I look forward to posting more images of work of mine and other artists once the show commences.

A twist of Sir Terry Frost!

I am currently working on a new commission for a Client who loves the work of Sir Terry Frost. There are two complimentary pieces one of which is featured with images on my website on the page 'work in progress' as I try to complete it.

When I first started I emulated Sir Terry's work and have not attempted the style for sometime. Starting these has reminded me how much fun they are to create and how enjoyable it is trying to arrive a colour combinations that work.

A Devon View

This abstract landscape is based on sketches I did whilst on holiday in Devon of the countryside around Bicton Park.

I am experimenting with a style which I first used some three years ago which is now influenced by the work of George Dannatt.

David Hockney and the Polaroid

Some 30 years ago David Hockney experimented with his Polaroid camera creating a photographic art form which at the time was revolutionary and on the whole ignored by Photo artists of the time though emulated since.

The instant image nature of the Polaroid allowed him to bypass the traditional and less available developing processes and to work at a speed akin to painting and thereby inject a high level of creativity into the process.

As Hockney says himself “In 1981 I started to play with the Polaroid camera and began making collages. Within a week, very quickly. I made them quite complex. This intrigued me and I became obsessed with it. I made about 150 collages with Polaroids….This very strongly kindled my interest in Cubism and in Picasso’s idea, so that in a sense it was photography that got me into thinking again about Cubist ways of seeing’

I remember seeing an exhibition of this work when I was about twenty years old and quite frankly my attempts to emulate the process was thwarted by cost and the painful slowness of developing processes of the time.

Thereafter I simply forgot about it until in recent times Hockney has engaged with new technologies and similar multi point photography which featured in his recent Royal Academy exhibition.

To me it proves that the camera can emulate the techniques of the traditional artist and I wonder if the advent of high quality easy to use and process camera technology has rendered representational art using traditional media obsolete.

If the main commercial market for art is in reproduction prints does it matter what the original source is?

Portland Stone Relief

It has been a while since I listed a relief - on the eve of taking a weeks holiday in Devon during what appears to be the monsoon season, I present a new piece 'Portland Stone Relief'.

I look forward to Devon providing me with inspiration for new pieces though I doubt it will provide me with a suntan!

I am happy to present the second of my two Portland storm paintings.This is a smaller piece which is from a sketch created on the same visit from which my previous piece 'Portland Storm' was taken which is now on its way to a customer in Germany.
